Why Become an AYSO Referee?

Volunteering

It is an easy way to volunteer. Your volunteer commitment is only during the weekends. No middle of the week commitments. High School aged kids can get community service credit.

Easy Start

The easiest age groups to referee are U8/U10. The speed of play is not that fast, which makes it easy to make a call. As you learn the game, you can move up in age groups.

Support

Most AYSO parents are very supportive of referees. Even if you miss a call or two, no one gets overly upset. There is also a staff of referee trainers and other experienced referees to help you learn.

Offside

While the offside Law is one of the most misunderstood, our teaching methods will help you understand it. Offside is not called in U8 or U10 divisions which make these games very easy to call and gain experience.

Free

All training is provided for free. There is no cost to you for the class or uniforms. We even throw in lunch or dinner depending on the schedule.

Scheduling

Check the AYSO 1343 Calendar for upcoming training.

Support

The league strongly supports its referees. Any abusive treatment of referees is not tolerated. Historically, coaches are willing to assist you in any way possible. While any coach will never agree with every call, all of our coaches appreciate the work of referees in providing a safe and fun environment for playing soccer. Disciplinary action will be taken against any coach who is abusive or intentionally undermines a referee's authority.

Self Improvement

If you don't know the game of soccer, refereeing is the best way to better learn the game. If you enjoy coaching, but feel you don't know the game well enough, this is the best way to learn.

Referee System

With approximately 850 kids registered for the 2006 season in St. George, referees are much needed to provide a Fun, Fair, and Safe atmosphere. With this new season ALL U10 and above teams must have a designated and trained ADULT referee. This will help ensure an even distribution of referees and allow all of us to share in the fairness and safety of the game for our kids.
